Furniture from rice and recycled foam enters the market

Production of the Foamy furniture collection, whose concept won the Ro Plastic Prize in the 2022 competition organised by Rossana Orlandi, has begun. Foamy, which has not yet been available for purchase, will soon be on the market. Compared to the original winning design by Balance is Motion, the collection will expand with new products and will be enhanced by an altered material composition. The original panels made of recycled plastic will be replaced by Resysta, a rice composite material that will make the entire product even more sustainable and more durable.

"Resysta is incredibly durable, yet it is basically a combination of rice husks, salt and mineral oil. It can easily withstand external influences such as water, frost, pests or mould," says Filip Mirbauer, creative director of Balance is Motion, about the material.

The collection has a distinctive design and is based on the principle of modular construction. Modularity guarantees easy repair and recycling and simple disassembly and assembly in case of transport. The production and sale of the collection will be handled by the Czech company Yate.

"We are delighted that Yate has fallen for the concept as much as we have and decided to transform what was originally a material experiment into a collection of small-scale manufactured products," says Eliška Novák Knotková, founder and CEO of Balance is Motion. She adds: "Yate has played an important role in Foamy's designs from the very first sketches, as 80% of the product is made up of their Polimix material, which is created by the secondary processing of surplus foam and pre-consumer waste from the production of their mattresses, children's foam pads and more."

The Foamy collection will be presented to the public at Designblok in October, where Balance is Motion was nominated for the Sustainable Design Award for its Ruderal project last year. Even at this year's edition, Balance is Motion will be hard to miss, as Foamy is only one of two exhibits they will be presenting.
