The 9th annual Prinsjesdag was held at a beautiful premises of the New Town Hall at Karlovo náměstí which is one of eighteen national cultural monuments in Prague, and its founding is dated around year 1348. The participants of this pleasant event also had an opportunity to visit the Town Hall’s tower which was completed in 1456.
After the welcome speech by Elias Drakopoulos, Chairman of the NCCC, H.E. Ed Hoeks, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Czech Republic, summarized the “Troonrede” (King Willem-Alexander’s Speech from the Throne). The beginning of the Speech was devoted to the MH17 air disaster that hit the Netherlands on July 17. In regard to a turbulent, uncertain international environment (Ukraine, Iraq, Gaza etc.), the government of the Netherlands will for the next year increase defence spending and will be more active in foreign policy promoting freedom, peace and security. The government will also work on ensuring a lasting economic recovery, with a focus on jobs and growth. For many guests it might have been shocking that the King in his Speech declared the simplification of the tax system, with a tax reduction to boost employment. This year the Speech was even more remarkable because of the 200th anniversary of the first state opening of the Dutch Parliament.
Furthermore, we had a chance to listen to Jiří Rusnok, Board member of the ČNB, and former Prime Minister, who shared with the audience the development and current state of the Czech economy and Pavel Zeman, Public Prosecutor who summarized the situation of justice and law in the Czech Republic mentioning the New Civil Code.
We would like to thank all speakers for their presence and participation in the event of the NCCC.
