Fairs with Albert is a project that gives children in orphanages the basic business skills. These will make it easier for them, once they leave their orphanage, to find a place on the labor market. The project is implemented by Albert Foundation and the civic association Spolu dětem.
The first training, a part of the project, took place on May 28. The training was called An Easy and Quick Way to Become a Businessman and it has been already taken by the children of the orphanages in Aš, Sedlec-Prčice a DOMINO Plzeň. Both children and teachers learned about the division of labor, team working, promotion, the culture of sale, how to set the price of a product or how to behave towards customers. The information is then used when preparing and manufacturing goods that they themselves will sell in the fairs in Albert stores before Christmas. The profit from the sale will then be divided among orphanages and the general public will have an opportunity to learn about their craft and selling skills.

In June, there were six training sessions across the Czech Republic, attended by children from more orphanages: in Ostrava, Prague, Olomouc, Brno and Teplice. “To give children in the orphanages money or gifts is quite easy, but this will not solve their future. That is why we prefer to design programs in which they can participate actively and which may help them in their decisions what direction to take in their future careers,” says the Program Manager of Albert Foundation, Petra Režná.
"Fairs with Albert are an example of practical and efficient help for orphanage children that a company can provide. At the fairs the children get their first work experience and, moreover, find out that the results of their work can be influenced by their behavior. This is an important insight mainly for older children who are getting prepared for the moment when they leave the orphanage and build their own lives,” says the director of the partner organisation Spolu dětem, Naďa Dittmannová.
In the project, the participating orphanages will be evaluated and at the end of the project, the most skilled sellers will be rewarded. In total, 18 orphanages of all over the Czech Republic took part. The fairs will take place in November and December 2012 by Albert hypermarkets in the same cities where the trainings took place.

Fairs with Albert through the eyes of children of orphanages

Anička, 16: I enjoyed it very much. It’s actually much better than to sit at school. I think I could make my living in retail, although it is very difficult. I don’t think I would like to manage a store, I would not dare, but to be employed in the store would be fine. What I liked most was the way the price of a product is set.
Radim, 14: It was great; I am looking very much for the pre-Christmas sales. I am making baskets. I don’t know what I will do but I may enjoy talking to customers. When we played the scenes, I liked it, I may enjoy working in a store and I can imagine being a manager one time in future.
Albert Foundation is a philanthropic subsidiary of Albert. As a part of the Bertíci project Albert has donated more than CZK 80 million on projects of education and personal development in orphanages and other social institutions. Since 2004, it has been running the educational program in healthy eating, Healthy 5, designed for children and their parents. During the program, dozens of thousands of children from all over the Czech Republic have been trained. The operation of Albert Foundation is funded mainly by the sales of plastic bags in Albert stores. The Albert Charity Foundation Board consists of experts on the main supported areas – socially disadvantaged groups and the support of a healthy lifestyle. Albert Charity Foundation was established on September 1, 2009. You will find more information at www.nadacnifondalbert.cz.
